      Introduction to Kabuki
The summer months at the National Theatre feature special performances of Kabuki to introduce this traditional art to students. The program always includes a friendly introductory lecture hosted by one of the young stars and performances by top-rate actors. If you have never seen Kabuki, this may be a perfect opportunity. For the time and the price and the quality of the performance, this can't be beat!

      RENJISHI (Dance of Sacred Lions)
Two entertainers dance a tale of the legendary shishi, sacred lions that live at the foot of a holy Buddhist mountain. Later, the shishi themselves appear and perform their dance with wild shaking of their long manes. The dance shows a parent shishi forcing his cub to undergo harsh training in order to grow up strong. This theme is based on the legend that shishi thrusts down its cubs to the bottom of a ravine and nurtures only strong cubs which climb up by themselves.
